The Neier Family in Owen County, (IN)

[This biography was written by Erwin Neier, Cloverdale, Putnam Co, IN, 28 Dec 1993, provided by Randi Maston Richardson]

     BIOGRAPHY:
According to his well kept daybook, Samuel Neier migrated to Jackson Township, Owen County, (IN) October 16, 1845. He arrived on his 21st birthday having been born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, October 16, 1824. It seems that he paused for a time at the little town of Milton in Wayne County before continuing his journey to Owen County. His future in-laws, the Fertigs had migrated to Wayne County in 1829. He later married Margaret Fertig, the daughter of Henry Fertig. Perhaps this explains his pause in Milton.
Margaret and Samuel were married March 5th, 1844, probably in Wayne County because it is said that he returned east and brought his bride back, she riding a horse and he walking.
As Samuel matured he became a skilled carpenter who helped construct houses and barns; spinning wheels; and coffins of black walnut lumber. He also served as a justice of the peace helping his fellow citizens solve their disputes in the fairest way possible.
As time progressed, Samuel and his wife had 11 children but suffered the loss of 7 of the children when they were of a young age. As a memorial, we might mention their names here: George, Henry, Lucinda, Daniel, John, Levi and his first born, Susan, who died of measles. Medical help was most primitive during this period of our history.
Samuel's wife, Margaret, died in 1870. He gave the plot of land upon which now rests the Fertig Cemetery. We can understand why.
In 1876 Samuel married Clara A HUNSICKER Frazier, the widow of Civil War veteran, Ara Frazier. Ara Frazier had died from a disease contacted during the war at the age of 32, leaving behind his widow and 5 minor children, the oldest of whom was 9 years of age. These children were, in order of their age, John, Alice, Eliza, Mary and Irene. And to Samuel and Clara were born two sons, Charles S and Lewis E Neier. All of these children, with the exception of Mary, who died as a young woman, lived out their three score and ten years of life. It is said that Samuel was a generous and kind man, and indeed he must have been to take on all of this responsibility.
In 1882 Samuel traded his well timbered property in Jackson Township, for some 360 acres in Cloverdale Township, Putnam County. He traded with a Mr TM Layne, a prominent hardware merchant in the small town of Cloverdale. Samuel resided in Putnam County, with his rather large family and their offspring, until his death in 1909.
Upon his death, he was buried beside his first wife, Margaret Fertig Neier, and their children, who had gone before them, in the Fertig Cemetery in Owen County. Later, in 1911, when Clara, his wife died, she was buried beside her first husband, Ara Frazier, in the Carolina Cemetery, Owen County. A suitable marker is provided for both.
My grandfather, Samuel Neier, was born some 105 years before I came along. It is said that he once remarked that he didn't mind dying, but he did not want to be forgotten. Indeed, he has not been.

     1909 OBITUARY:
Loving Father—Samuel Neier was born in Schuylkill County, PA October 15, 1824 (and) departed his life March 25th 1909, aged 84 years, 5 months and 10 days. He came from Pennsylvania to Delaware County, IN in 1838, at the age of 14 years, walking all the way. Living there about three years he was then married to Maragret Fertich and moved to Owen Co, IN near where he was laid to rest. He gave this cemetery known as the Fertig cemetery to the public as a burial place.
To this union were born ten children seven boys and three girls: Susan, Lucinda, Louisa, George, Henry, Daniel, John, Levi, Amos and Aly. His wife died Dec 22, 1870. All preceded him to that better land except Amos and Aly. In 1876, he was married to Clara A Frazier. To this union were born two children, Charles and Lewis who with their mother, Amos and Aly, three step-daughters, one step son, 2 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss, but their loss was his eternal gain.
He (Samuel) moved to Putnam County, Indiana in the year of 1882 living there until his death. Mr Neier and wife joined church in 1853. He was afflicted with a cancer on his face which caused his death. He was afflected for 25 years or more. [Received from Madeline Guillaum July 2001.
