     1998 OBITUARY: Marcella Bus Sherley, 79, a retired teacher, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, in Benbrook.
Funeral: 2 pm Saturday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials: First Christian Church or your own church.
     Marcella Bus Sherley was born Jan 3, 1919, in Cleburne. She was a retired teacher and an elder at First Christian Church. She was an actress and a teacher of English, speech and drama in Lexington, KY. She danced at The Last Frontier, Texas Centennial, in Fort Worth in 1936. She performed in community theaters in Hollywood and New York.
     She served the Christian Church in England with her husband as a fraternal worker under the auspices of the Division of Overseas Ministries of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). Since 1980, Marcella and her husband served more than a dozen interim ministries in Christian Churches in Central TX, the last being Bethany Christian in White Settlement. During World War II, Marcella served as an airway traffic controller in the ATC Center in Fort Worth. She graduated from Stripling High School and TCU.
     Marcella held on to life until she learned that her granddaughter, Kate, had made her a great-grandmother with the birth of Anastasia Marcella Makrides. Survivors: Husband of 58 years, the Rev Jack Sherley of Fort Worth; daughters, Deborah Rose, a journalist, of Charlottesville, VA, and Christine Evans, an educator, of Hollywood, FL; sister, Ann Bus of Fort Worth; grandson, Andrew Evans of Florida; granddaughter, Kate Makrides of Pulaski, VA; and great-granddaughter, Anastasia Marcella Makrides.

     2011 OBITUARY: Jack McKinley Sherley, 92, a pastor, chaplain and professor, formerly of Lexington, KY, and Fort Worth, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at a hospice in Charlottesville, VA. Memorial service: The Rev Erik Wikstrom will lead a memorial service at 4 pm Monday at Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, Unitarian Universalist, 717 Rugby Road, Charlottesville. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1445 E Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
     The Rev Sherley was born March 25, 1919, in Spring Valley, KS, and moved with his mother, Caroline McKinley Pell, to Los Angeles, CA in 1923. He was married to Marcella Bus Sherley of Fort Worth from 1940 until her death in 1998.
     After graduating from Texas Christian University in 1940 and Brite College of the Bible in 1944, he was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He served as a lieutenant in the US Navy Chaplain Corps, stationed from 1944 to 1946 with the Third Marine Division on Guam and the Sixth Marine Division in Tsing Tao, China.
     The Rev Sherley was a chaplain with the Veterans Administration in NY and NJ from 1946 to 1952 and with the US Public Health Service Hospital (now the Federal Prison) in Lexington from 1953 to 1977. At Lexington Theological Seminary he was professor of pastoral counseling from 1953 to 1977. Following his retirement from public service, he served in Birmingham, England, with the Disciples of Christ Division of Overseas Ministries from 1977 to 1980.
Returning to the United States, the Rev Sherley served as interim pastor for Disciples of Christ churches in Graham, Eastland and Bowie, Texas; Casa View Christian Church in Dallas; and Bethany Christian Church in Fort Worth.
     He was preceded in death by his second wife, the former Elizabeth Grubbs Leggett of Lexington, in 2009. The Rev Sherley moved to The Colonnades in Charlottesville, VA following her death, and attended Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, Unitarian Universalist.
     Survivors: Two daughters and their spouses, two grandchildren and their spouses, and two great-grandchildren, Deborah and Benjamin Rose of Charlottesville, Christine and Douglas Evans of Gilford, NH, Kate, Phil and Anastasia Makrides of Waynesboro and Andrew, Jenna and Wesley Evans of Sunderland, MA.

     2015 OBITUARY: Deborah Sherley Rose, 66, passed away at her home in Charlottesville, VA on November 1, 2015. Her husband, Benjamin Rose, was at her side as he had been over the final months of her struggle with lung cancer.
Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Marcella Sherley.
     In addition to Ben Rose, her husband of many years, she is survived by his mother, Wanda Rose, their extended family in Wise and Norton,Virginia; her daughter, Katherine Makrides and granddaughter, Anastasia Makrides of Charlottesville; her sister, Christine Sherley Evans (Douglas Evans) of Gilford, New Hampshire; and nephew, Andrew Evans (Jenna Evans) and their sons, Wesley and Jensen of Sunderland, Massachusetts.
     Deborah was born in New York City, moving to Lexington, KY with her family soon after. She grew up in Lexington, graduating from Lafayette High School in 1966. She was active in drama and vocal music at Lafayette, participating in State Drama competitions and Allstate Chorus. She earned her BA (in the Honors Program, Phi Beta Kappa) and MA degrees from the University of Kentucky, and completed additional graduate coursework at Vanderbilt University. Her studies in English prepared her for an outstanding career in journalism at newspapers across the country including the Bakersfield CA, the Coalfield Progress in Norton, VA and more recently the Daily Progress in Charlottesville. She won numerous awards through out her career, including several from the Virginia Press Association. She was subsequently an editor of law books at LexisNexis.
     She was a devoted member of Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, Unitarian Universalist in Charlottesville, Virginia and considered the staff and congregation extended family. Among her numerous contributions to the life of that congregation are her sermons and poetry to be published by the church. A service celebrating her life will be held there on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 7 p.m.The family requests that donations to the minister's discretionary fund be made in lieu of flowers.
