BIOGRAPHY: 29 Clarice and Winifred lived with his folks after their marriage until February 1928. They farmed for two years south of Rensselaer, then rented a farm north of Brook for six years, raising cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese. Winifred farmed with horses and worked long hours. They bought the farm formerly owned by Mr and Mrs Thomas Whaley in Washington Twp in 1934 and moved there over a year later. In later years he had a tractor to farm with.
They lived there 23 years. A bad storm in the 50s damaged the buildings and fences and it took all summer to put things back in order. Two years later caught Winifred loading corn and fertilizer on a wagon in the crib. He was picked up by the wind and dropped between a couple of wagons, badly damaging his leg. The neighbors came to help set right the destruction.
Winifred was elected Trustee of Washington Twp in 1952. They sold the farm in 1956 and moved to the town of Brook. He worked for several different farmers after that, planting and harvesting crops, driving their grain to the elevator. They belonged to the Christian Church in Brook. 29
Kathleen Sue Pribie [Mapes] visited with Clarice in Mar 1995 at her home in Brook. Still strong and healthy living by herself at 89, she talked about life on the farm. She loved the animals; the pigs, cows, sheep and chickens. Their farm was hit by tornados in 1951 and 1953 and they moved to Brook in 1957. After she fell and broke her hip in Jun 1995, she moved to a nursing home in Williamsport.
