     Bill was a State Farm Insurance agent 37 years. His body was cremated and the ashes scattered at his home. A memorial stone is in the Ness City Cemetery. He was the father of Andrew Hays Smith.

     1950 OBITUARY: Hays (Sr) was the son of Nancy "Maud" (Hays) and William "Henry" Smith. He married "Pearl" (Conley) 11-28-1917 in Alden, Rice Co, Kansas. He taught school for 12 years in various places in Kansas. In 1930, he became a postal clerk in Ness City and worked there until his death. He was the father of William "Bill" Hays, Jr, the twins Robert "Bob" and Richard "Dick," and Betty Jo Smith.
     He was predeceased by his father, mother, one sister and three brothers.
     Survivors include three sons, Bill of Jetmore, Bob and Dick both of Dighton, and one daughter Betty Jo of the home; two brothers Isaac of Laverne, OK, and Claude of Denver, CO; one sister, Mrs Ernest Powell of Alden, and a number of nieces and nephews.
     He received his education in the Alden schools and at Fort Hays State College. He was a veteran of WWI.
     Funeral services were held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, with Rev Henry Jongema officiating. Interment in the Ness City cemetery.
