     2ND MARRIAGE: Susan, 67, second married Lewis LICKEY [b. 20 May 1847, OH; d. 28 Feb 1928, Sedgewick, Witchita Co, OK- age 80], son of George and Elizabeth LICKEY (Grundy Co, MO census), on 7 Aug 1913, Wilson Co, KS: Bk J/35. After Lickey died she applied for a pension based on John W Garriott's service record. At that time she claimed to be 58 years old.

     1889 OBITUARY: Oliver Garriot, aged about 17, son of JW Garriott, of Talleyrand yownship, died last Tuesday and was buried Wednesday. This is the second son Mr Garriott has buried this spring, the death in both cases resulting from measles.

     1936 OBITUARY: Susan Emily Martin married John Washington Garriott October 8, 1865 in Mercer, Missouri. Susan married Lewis Lickey (1847-1928) August 7 1913 in Neodesha, Kansas. She is listed as the daughter of John F Martin. In 1930 she was 85 and living with daughter Martha Jane Robbins and her husband in Lewis & Clark, Chelan, Washington.
     Daughter Martha Garriott married William Robbins 24 Nov 1898 in Neodesha. His birthplace was listed as England 1861, son of Dick Robbins and Jane Lorimac. Susan born in 1860. Son Hiram N Garriott married Alice May Walls May 1, 1892 in Neodesha. Born 1867. Alice born 1869 in IL. Daughter Zarilda Garriott, born 1878, 1910 Neodesha Census, with Susan listed as widow. Roomers: LS Magnas, L Adell, HH Adell, and HE Hurst. Living at 702 Iowa Street. Susan listed as mother of 7 children, 5 living in 1910.

     One additional child is not linked: Joseph Manley Garriott, Born Dec 23 1879 in Grundy, Missouri and died November 29 1977 in Everett, Snohomish, WA.      CIVIL WAR LETTERS: John W Garriott wrote letters to his family in Missouri from the war. These letters are now in a collection at the University of Missouri.

     1855 MOVE TO MISSOURI: John and Ambrose "Newt" moved to Iowa in 1853, and then moved again in 1855 to Putnam Co, Mo. After the war John moved to Grundy Co, MO.

     LAND SOLD: [Putnam Co, MO Deed Bk, dated 24 Mar 1865] John Washington Garriott sold 80 acres to his cousin John William and John Garriott [S2 SE4 S34 T67 R21] for $320.

     MILITARY: John W Garriott enrolled 17 Jun 1861 and was a corporal with Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, Missouri Volunteers for the Union in the Civil War. Prisoner of War records (so I've heard) show him captured at Pittsburg Landing [TN]. He was paroled at Montgomery, Alabama in May 1862, and discharged on 13 Nov 1864 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

     PENSION: John W Garriott was described as 5'-6 3/4" in height, with dark complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. He was 58 years old on 28 May 1890, a farmer. He claimed that, "On or about a place called Nashville, TN, on or about June or July 1862, he contracted rheumatism and resulting disease of health, also resulting disease of eyes, also, contracted scurvy, and resulting disease of mouth, stomach, liver, and bowels." "He was not treated for disability in the hospital while in service." His widow stated in pension application that her husband died of dropsy. At this time he listed one minor child, Robert L Garriott, born 11 Dec 1883.

      WIDOW'S PENSION: Susan, John's widow, received a pension [certificate 538.576] from Apr 1908 until 7 Aug 1913 when she remarried. John W and Susan E had owned 320 acres of farm land, 80 of which was sold, according to her pension application affidavit, because she couldn't afford the interest.
     Susan was dropped as pensioner by the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions on 4 Dec 1903 [cert 638.576] because of remarriage on 7 Aug 1913.

, stamped 8 Oct 1898, US Pension Office, Susan provided a "List and fair evaluation of all property owned by her:"
----320 acres of upland @ $7.00 = $2240;
----1 mare, 15 years old $20;
----1 mare, 1 year old, colt $15;
----8 head of cows heifers @ $20 = $160
----15 head of pigs @ $2.00 = $30;
----Farming tools $100;
----Total: $2565.
----Mortgage on land = $800,
----Balance $1765
     "No one is bound for her support. She gets 1/3 of corn from place as rent. Average yield from place is something less than 2400 bushels of corn of which she gets 1/3 or 800 bushels, worth an average of $160. Has to pay taxes and interest amounting to annually to about $400." [filed by O E Howe, Attorney for Claimant]

     Pension Application Affidavit
, stamped 1 Mar 1900, US Pension Office, Susan stated, "That of the 320 acres of land mentioned in former evidence in the above claim, 80 acres of it has been transferred on account of not being able to pay the interest on the mortgage thereby, leaving only 240 acres in which she has any interest(,) of this she owns 160 acres individually clear of incumberance, and of the the value of $1500; she owns an undivided one half interest in eighty acres of land, the entire eighty being of the value of about $300. The total number of acres under cultivation on the entire 240 acres is about 73 acres, the same is rented, the affiant receiving one third of the crop amounting in all to about $106; that she owns three horses of the value of about $65, also one cow and three calves of the value of about $55; that she has no other income from any source other than has just been stated above; that her taxes amount to $31.10 per year; that she pays interest amounting to about $30.00; That she cannot state as to the amount expended for repairs on the premises; that the living expenses for herself and minor child would amount to about $50; that she has no net income and for the last three years her expenses have been greater than the income; that affiant owes about $375.00."
     Pension Application Affidavit, stamped 23 Aug 1894, US Pension Office, Samuel and Girilda Megerity stated that they were personally well acquainted with John and Susan for 32 years and that they had married them in their home in Mercer Co, MO, and that neither had been previously married.
     Pension Application Affidavit, stamped 30 Nov 1928, US Pension Office, Mary A Graham stated, "She is 60 years of age and has been a resident of Neodesha and Wilson Co, KS for the past 51 years.  That she was well and personally acquainted with John W Garriott, who was a member of Company G, 18 MO Inf, and his wife Susan Garriott as their farm and the farm of her husband joined, their houses being opposit each other accross the road. She knows that Susan Garriott was the widow of John W Garriott, and was up to the 7th day of Aug 1913, when she married one Lewis Lickey. She knows the families well and knows that Lewis Lickey died on or about the 28th day of Feb 1928."
