     1939 OBITUARY: Ross Shirley. CONTINENTAL, Feb 2-- Funeral services for Ross Shirley 50, who died in the Toledo State Hospital Tuesday morning following an extended illness, ar incomplete.

     Survivors are his parents, Mr and Mrs Nathan Shirley, two brothers, and three sisters.

     2000 OBITUARY: Claude L Shirley age 95, of 1531 Bacom Point Road, Pahokee, died Sunday afternoon (September 14, 2000) at his residence. A native of Continental, OH, he was born on August 13, 1905, son of the late Nathan C Shirley and Emma Ridenour Shirley . He graduated from High School at Continental, OH in the class of 1923. He attended Ohio State University and Fort Wayne Business College. He managed the family farm until it was sold In 1944. He had made his home in Pahokee since moving from Continental, OH, in 1945.
     In 1945 he and his brother, LL Shirley, established Shirley Brothers Building Supply and Concrete. They expanded the business in both Pahokee and Belle Glade before selling to Rinker Materials Corporation in 1965. Shirley Brothers furnished most of the concrete for the building of the sugar mills in the Glades area. Claude and "Billie" both enjoyed golf and fishing. He fished salt water In Florida at Marco and points south and also at Port Salerno. He enjoyed hunting, starting as a boy in Ohio with pheasant and in Florida with turkey, deer and quail.
     In the late 1950's he helped establish, with other local members, a hunting camp on a ranch between Orlando and Melbourne. The camp was enjoyed by all for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pahokee; a fifty-seven year member of the Pahokee Lodge No. 1638, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; a fifty-seven year member of Okeechobee Lodge No. 237, Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Lake Worth and Amara Temple. He was a former member and past president (1950-51) of the Rotary Club of Pahokee, from 1955-1970 served on the board of directors of Everglades Federal Savings and Loan Association, and from 1963-1973 served on the board of directors for the Bank of Belle Glade.
     He was preceded in death by a son, C Leland Shirley, Jr; a great-granddaughter April Raleigh; two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are: his wife, the former Emma "Billie" Burks, to whom he was married on January 12, 1928, and enjoyed seventy-two wonderful years of love and friendship; son, William B Shirley, and his wife Barbara (Wilkinson) Shirley, of Pahokee; grandchildren, Marilyn F Shirley of Pahokee, Claudia Wingo, and her husband Jack, of Melbourne Beach, Barbara Ann Shirley, and her friend Blake Ellis, of Lake Park, GA, Jennifer S Singer of Ocala, FL, Allison S Hudson, and her husband Scott, of Winter Park; daughter-in-law, Shirley Shirley Armstrong, and her husband Dr D Wade, Ceredo, WV; grandchildren, Leigh Ann Stites, and her husband Mark, of Oakland Park, KS, and Rev Nathan Christian Shirley , and his wife Isabel, of Fort Worth, TX; sister-in-law Sarah Patrick Burks of Griffin, GA; 9 great-grandchildren, 10 nieces and 5 nephews.
      The Funeral Service will be be Saturday afternoon, September 23, 2000 at 2 O'clock in the First Baptist Church, Pahokee. Dr D Wade Armstrong and Rev Nathan Christian Shirley will officiate. Interment will follow in Port Mayaca Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the residence, 1531 Bacom Point Rd. The body will lie instate at the church at on Saturday from 1 O'clock until the service time.

     2001 OBITUARY: Emma Burks Shirley "Billie" age 96, of Pahokee, died Tuesday evening, December 18, 2001, at her residence. A native of Spaulding County, GA, she was born on April 25, 1905, daughter of the late William Jeremiah and Mahalia Jane Mitchell Burks . She was a graduate of the Griffin High School, Griffin, GA, and the State Normal College at Athens, GA. She had made her home in Pahokee since moving with her husband, Claude L Shirley, Sr, in 1945. She and her late husband established Shirley Brothers Building Supply in Concrete in Pahokee in 1945. The business expanded in both Pahokee and Belle Glade and was sold to Rinker Materials in 1965. Shirley Brothers furnished most of the concrete for the building of the sugar mills in the Glades area. A long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Pahokee, she was a member of the church choir for many years and was also a Sunday School teacher. For many years she saw that flowers were in the sanctuary every Sunday. She was also a member of Sugarland Chapter Number 220, Order of the Eastern Star, the Pahokee Garden Club, and was a Charter member of the Auxiliary of Everglades Memorial Hospital. For five years she taught exceptional children in the Glades area. Her family was her joy and, until her health forced her to stop, she kept a pictorial history of her family as a history for future generations. After her and Claude's retirement In 1963, they enjoyed golfing and fishing all over the country. She had fished all over the USA in hip boots and made a hole-in-one at the Belle Glade Country Club.
     She was preceded In death by: a son - Claude Leland Shirley, Jr; a great-granddaughter - April Raleigh; brothers - David Halsey Burks , Thomas Bryon Burks , Robert Wilson Burks , and William Jeremiah Burks, Jr: and on September 14, 2000, by her beloved husband of 72 years, Claude Leland Shirley, Sr, to whom she was married on January 12, 1928.
     Surviving are: her son and his wife, William B and Barbara Wilkinson Shirley of Pahokee; granddaughters - Marilyn Shirley of Pahokee, Claudia Wingo (Jack) of Melbourne Beach, Barbara Ann Shirley of Lake Park, GA; Jennifer Singer of Okeechobee, Allison Hudson (Scott) of Winter Park; Daughter-in-law - Shirley Shirley Armstrong (Dr D Wade Armstrong) of Ceredo, WV; granddaughter - Leigh Ann Stites (Mark) of Oakland Park, KS; grandson - Rev N Chris Shirley and wife Isabel (Heath) Shirley of Fort Worth, TX; 9 great grandchildren and her sister-in-law Sarah Patrick Burks of Griffin, GA.
     The funeral service will be Saturday afternoon, December 22, 2001, at 2 pm in the First Baptist Church, Pahokee. Dr Wade Armstrong and her grandson, Rev N Chris Shirley will officiate. Interment will follow in Port Mayaca Memorial Gardens.
