     BIOGRAPHY: Andrew Jackson Smiley was a blacksmith with a shop in Halfrock in the early days, and later at Spickard. "I have heard him tell of shoeing horses for the outlaws of Missouri, then, in the last years of work [he] had a shop in Halfrock, where he retired. He sold out and [they] made their home with children." [Chet Garriott] 14 They were members of the Halfrock Baptist Church.

     MILITARY: 23 Andrew Smiley, Sr, Andrew Jackson Smiley's father, was a Private, Co.I, 44th Infantry Regiment, MO Volunteers, commanded by Col. Bradshaw. Medical records show him treated on 30 Sep to 7 Oct, and at the battle of Franklin, TN, 30 Nov 1864, where the 44th MO Infantry was virtually slaughtered.
     He died in Franklin, Williamson Co, TN on 24 Dec 1864, "The result of a gunshot wound [on 30 Nov] received from the enemy while in the line of duty." He was described as, "Age 25 yrs, 5'-11", eyes blue, hair light, complex. fair, born in Davis Co, IN, a farmer." He was buried initially on a plantation, but his body was exhumed and buried at the National Cemetery in Murfreesboro, TN in a marked grave in the Union section.

     PENSION: 23 Emily Tipton Smiley [Andrew Jackson Smiley's mother] applied for a pension on 16 Jan 1865, listing a son Andrew Jr Smiley was born only two months later and a son William Riley Smiley [b. 23 Apr 1863]. She received a pension [certificate 54.972] on 6 Sep 1865 of $8 per month.
     Emily 2nd married Elias Holsinger on 4 Oct 1868 and guardianship of the two brothers [William Riley Smiley and Andrew Jr Smiley] was granted to Hiram Tipton [probably Emily's father]. He was granted a pension [certificate 155.524]. Emily divorced Elias on 19 May 1882, Milan, Sullivan Co, MO: Vol F/383, and was awarded custody of two children born of this second marriage, John and Ida. Emily 3rd married William "Henry" Devers on 25 Apr 1886 and was divorced from him on 20 Oct 1906. On 12 Nov 1906 she applied for [and received] an increase to $12/month in the original pension [certificate 54.972].
     On 6 May 1933 [at the age of 89] Emily was adjudged a mental incompetent [Sullivan Co, MO Probate Court Bk: 2/149] and a legal guardian, Myrtle High, of Milan, MO, was appointed. Various guardians continued until her death in 1942 at the age of 99.
