     MILITARY:16 John Milton enlisted on 29 Jul 1861 in Putnam Co, MO for 3 years, was mustered in on 14 Nov 1861, LaClede, MO. He was a private with Company B, 18th Infantry Regiment, Missouri Volunteers for the Union under Capt. Hudson Stulls. He reinlisted for an additional 3 years on 1 Jan 1864. He was discharged [with his regiment] on 18 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, and described as 5'-6" in height, with a fair complexion, dark hair, and black eyes.
     John Milton was with the 18th MO Infantry in the Battle for Shiloh [Pittsburg Landing, Hardin Co, TN] on 6-7 Apr 1862. The Mercer County History Book, Vol. 1, 1845-1947 19claims that John Milton was at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run [Manassas, VA] and, while on maneuvers in Tennessee [Battle of Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing, TN], he met Mary Bashie Cothren in the town of Perdie, McNairy Co, TN. John Washington Garriott, John Milton's cousin, also with the 18th MO Infantry, was captured at the Battle for Shiloh.

     PENSION:16 John Milton applied for a pension on 25 May 1885 [claim 376.837] disabled by disease of eyes, as a result of injury from fragment of a gun-cap, near East Point, Georgia, 12 Oct 1864 and a cold near Petersburg, Virginia, May 1865. "In discharging his piece at guard-mount [he] received injury in the right eye from fragment of gun-cap." He was treated by the regiment surgeon. He received a pension. [certificate 231.653].

     SURNAME SPELLING: Mary's last name has been also spelled Caulhorn, Cothern. Her mother, Martha, died at daughter Mary's home and was buried in Halfrock Cemetery.

     BIOGRAPHY: John Milton's courting of Mary Bashe Cothren made rebel soldiers suspicious that her father was a spy for the Union Army. They took Mary's father from his home one night and he never saw his family again.19 [Sandra Gatrel]
      John Milton and Mary married and lived in TN during the war. After the war, Mary, her mother Martha, and her four sisters went with John Milton by boat up the Mississippi River, first to Hannibal, Marion Co, MO, then to Powersville in Putnam Co, and finally to Mercer County, where they bought a farm two miles west of Halfrock.

     WIDOW'S PENSION:16 John's widow, Mary B, applied for a pension in 1916 [claim 756.464, cert 555.400] at the age of 70. She received $50 per month, last paid to 4 May 1928. John Milton owned 142 acres in Mercer Co, MO at his death, which was divided among the heirs. His widow received 44-1/6 acres and $400. He died intestate and carried no life insurance.
