     1930 Morgan Twp, Porter Co, IN census: has (all b. IN) Ernest Garriott 35, Farmer-Dairy Farm; Orabelle Garriott 34; Ruth Garriott 8; Betty Garriott 7; Joan Garriott 6; John Garriott 3; and Wayne Coates 24, Laborer-Farm.
     1940 Morgan Twp, Porter Co, IN census: has (all but 1 b. IN) Ernest Garriott 45, Farmer-Farm; Orabelle Garriott 44; Ruth Garriott 18; Elizabeth Garriott 17; Joan Garriott 16; John Garriott 13; Mary Lou Garriott 6; and La Verna Williamson 19, b. KY, Hired Hand-Farm.

     MILITARY: 23 Ernest enlisted on 15 Jun 1918, age 23, 123#, 5'-8.1/2" tall, in Indiana. He was a private [US 3.450.251], 164th Co, Transportation Corps. He was admitted to the Hospital in France on 3 Oct 1918 for bronco pneumonia, transferred to USA Base Hospital No 37, Dartford, Kent, England, for convalescence. He was discharged 25 Jul 1919, Camp Sherman, OH.

     PENSION: 23 [Claim XC-16.588.095] Ora Belle received a pension of $50.40 beginning 15 Feb 1956 based on Ernest's military service. She also worked at Harveys Dime Store, Valparaiso, IN.

     1959 PENSION STATEMENT: 23 "We were farmers, living on a rented farm. Ernest milked cows, raised hogs, hay and grain crops. I helped with the chores, helped grind feed, kept the dairy equipment clean, etc. I raised chickens and peddled dressed chickens and eggs. I baked pies, cakes, and made candy on order for customers. Every winter I picked turkeys at a neighboring turkey farm. I worked one school year at the Valparaiso University cafeteria. I did anything I could to make a little to add to our savings." (statement made to pension office on 7 Feb 1959 explaining why the "savings" loaned to someone else, now being repaid to her after Ernest's death, should not be counted as income-- or affect her pension)
