     1920 FARM DIRECTORY: This Montgomery Co, IN directory lists a "Lannie" Garriott, with wife Daisy Matney, and children Harold and Hilda, as a tenant farmer of 265 acres of land owned by Dr JS Niven, Section 18, Scott Township. Garriott had been a resident of county since 1916.


     OBITUARY: SCOTTSBURG-- Gene H Vest, 47, of Scottsburg, died at 9 am Saturday at his home. Vest was president of Gene H Vest, Inc, owner of Vest Home Center, and former owner of GH Vest Funeral home.

     He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a volunteeer fireman. He was a member of Scottsburg Lodge 572, F&AM. He was also a member of Scottsburg Lodge 107 Order of Eastern Star, and Murat Temple Shrine in Indianapolis. Vest was a graduate of Indiana College of Mortuary Science. He was a World War II veteran. He was past president of Scottsburg Lions Club and past commander of Scott Post 234, American Legion.

     He is survived by his wife, Jewell Comer Vest; a son, Jack H Vest; a daughter, Joan E Vest, of Indianapolis; two stepsons, Gary L and Larry R Austin; a sister and two grandchildren.

     The funeral will be at 8 pm Monday at Stewart Funeral Home here, with private burial in Scottsburg Cemetery. The body will be at the funeral home after 11 am Sunday.

     1970 OBITUARY: Mrs Gene H Vest Dies: Wife of Funeral Director... Scottsburg, Ind-- Mrs Mary Joyce Vest, 42, Scottsburg, wife of Gene H Vest, a Scottsburg funeral director, died yesterday at her home. She was a registered nurse and funeral director. Mrs Vest was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and the Psi Iota Sorority.

     Services will be held at 8 pm Monday at the Vest Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Scottsburg cemetery.

     Survivors besides her husband include a sonm John H Vest, at home; a daughter Mrs Joan E Martin of Scottsburg; her Father Dr Floyd S Napper of Scottsburg, and a brother Dr Karl Napper of Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill.

     1989 OBITUARY: Lenna Kennedy Ray, 84, died Sunday at Norton Hospital in Louisville. She was a retired teacher for Scott County Districts 1 and 2 and past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 107.

     Survivors: her husband, Ervin L Ray; a brother David F Garriott; and a sister, Esther Young of San Antonio, Texas.

     Funeral: 2 pm Wednesday, Scottsburg United Methodist Church, with entombment in Scottsburg Mausoleum. Visitation at Collins Funeral Home from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday and at the church after 11 am Wednesday.

     2005 OBITUARY: David F Garriott, 88, Scottsburg, died at *:21 pm Friday, Dec 2 2005 at his residence. Mr Garriott was a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd Degree member of Scottsburg Lodge 572, Free and Accepted Mason's, recipient of the Robert C Peterson Lynnwood Farm Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, president in 1982 of the National Maine-Anjou Association, selected for the Maione-Man of the Year Award in 1982, member of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, director of the Indiana Beef Evaluation Program, member and one of the founders of the Scott County Fair Board Association, Honorary Kentucky Colonel, loyal supporter of the Scottsburg High School basketball program, named to the Purdue Agricultural Hall of Fame and selected for the Outstanding Scottsburg Alumni Award in 2000. A life resident of Scott County, he was a farmer and cattleman and was also a former Scott County Commissioner.

     Born July 25, 1917, at Scottsburg, he was a son of James Oscar Garriott and Ida Jane Baker Garriott, both of whom preceded him in death. He mardried Eleanor J Polley Garriott, who died Aug 20, 1965.

     Survivors include three children, Tommy (Denise) Garriott and Lois Anne Newhart, both of Scottsburg, and Nina (Parke) Vehslage, Brownstown; four grandchildren, Burt and Crede Garriott and Mark and David Vehslage; and seven great-grandchildren, Seth, Sam and Cole Garriott and Kaitlyn, Andrew, Marley and Evan Vehslage.

     He was preceded in death by four sisters, Jewell Garriott, Lucille Napper, Lenna Maude Kennedy and Esther Young, and a brother, James Oscar Garriott.

     Dr Kris Small will conduct funeral services at 2 pm Tuesday at Collins Funeral Home, Scottsburg. Burial will take place at Scottsburg Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 pm to 8 pm today and from 12:30 pm until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Scottsburg Alumni Scholarship Fund.

​     2014 OBITUARY: NILES - Karl F Napper, MD, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Niles, MI, surrounded by family. He was born October 25, 1936 to Dr Floyd and Lucille Napper in Indianapolis, IN. They proceeded him in death along with his sister, Mary Joyce Vest.
     On May 15, 1964, Karl married Arlene Totten in Broadway Methodist Church, Indianapolis, IN. She survives along with daughters, Krys (Mark) Slepian of Newton, NJ and Penny (Bud) Smith of Larkspur, CO and son, Eric (Crissy) Napper of Niles, MI. Also surviving are grandchildren, Sarah and Sydney Slepian, Charlie (Anna) Smith, Marti Smith and Evan, Kyle, and Ashley Napper.
     He graduated from Scottsburg High School, Scottsburg, IN, Indiana University, Bloomington and Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, IN. He served an internship at Memorial Hospital, South Bend and then returned to Indianapolis to complete his training in Anesthesia at IU Medical School. Karl served with the US Navy, which included a tour of duty (1968-1969) as Chief of Anesthesia at the 3rd Marine Division, Children's Hospital, Delta Medical Company, Quang Tri Province, Dong Ha, Vietnam which was five miles from the Demilitarized Zone.

     He returned to South Bend to practice Anesthesia at Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1990. Karl was an avid fisherman and cyclist. He was inducted into The Little 500 Hall of Fame in Bloomington, and in 1960 was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic cycling team. Karl valued his privacy and will be remembered for his honesty, reliability and diligence in completing tasks, and courage in the face of recent health issues. He loved his family and taught us well.
     Funeral services for Karl will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, April 5, 2014 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev Dr Don Neely of First United Methodist Church, South Bend will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 pm until the time of services on Saturday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice .
